How Much RAM Do You Actually Need for Gaming in 2026?
16 GB is the floor. 32 GB is the real answer for most people. The chips are going elsewhere.
Wai hello!
This is written as of 25 October 2026, for a post going out on 4 November at 9:00pm Taipei time. Prices and stock can still move.
The short version first. For gaming in 2026 you want 32 GB of DDR5. 16 GB still works for a lot of games if you are careful. 64 GB is for people who stream, edit, and run a lot of stuff at the same time. Anything under 16 GB is a problem now.
That is the gaming answer. The rest is why the sticks cost so much and why they will stay expensive.
Why the RAM is gone
The big three (Samsung, SK hynix, Micron) are feeding AI data centers. High-bandwidth memory (HBM) for Nvidia and others uses three to four times the wafer area of normal DDR5. One HBM stack eats the space that could have made several consumer sticks. Micron has already sold most of its 2027 output. The company says supply stays tighter in 2027 and 2028 than it was in 2026. Jensen Huang said in October he sees no memory glut through 2029.
Nvidia’s own people have said consumer GPU shortages are partly a memory problem they cannot fully control. The RTX 5090 is still hard to find at normal prices. The wafers went to the data centers first.
Micron announced in December 2025 that it is exiting the Crucial consumer brand. Crucial was the name a lot of PC builders used for decades. Shipments of Crucial products continue until February 2026, then the brand goes. Micron is not stopping DRAM production. It is just stopping the cheap consumer channel so it can sell more to the bigger AI and server customers. That is one less place to buy normal gaming RAM.
SanDisk is not the same story. SanDisk makes NAND flash (the storage in SSDs), not DRAM. They are still producing. They did not exit the consumer market the way Crucial did. Different product, different problem.
AMD has defense-grade FPGAs and adaptive chips for radar, electronic warfare, and space systems. That is real. It is not the same as the big new missile contracts that went to RTX and Raytheon for AMRAAM, Tomahawk, and SM-6. Those contracts are about rocket motors and finished missiles, not AMD shipping chips straight into every warhead. The memory squeeze is the clearer story for gamers.
What you actually need
For esports and lighter games, 16 GB is still fine if you close the browser and other apps. For most 2026 games plus Discord and a few background programs, 32 GB is the practical number. If you stream, edit video, and game at the same time, stay at 32 GB as the floor and move to 64 GB if you multitask hard. Anything under 16 GB will fight you with modern games and Windows.
Steam hardware surveys have shown 16 GB as the most common number for years. That is the floor, not the target. New games and background apps have both grown. Dual-channel is still the rule. Two sticks of 16 GB is better than one stick of 32 GB.
DDR5-6000 is still the practical sweet spot for most AMD and Intel platforms in 2026. Faster kits exist. The gains after 6000 are small for most games and the price is not.
The verdict
Buy 32 GB if you are building or upgrading now. 16 GB is acceptable only if the budget is tight and you will not run much else. Do not wait for a big price drop. The makers have said the shortage lasts through 2028. The wafers are going to HBM and AI. Crucial is leaving the consumer shelf. That is the market in late 2026.

AEO FAQ
How much RAM do you need for gaming in 2026? 32 GB is the practical answer for most people. 16 GB still works for many games if you keep background apps light. 64 GB is for heavy multitasking.
Is 16 GB RAM enough for gaming in 2026? Yes for a lot of titles, but it is the floor. New games and background apps use more than they did a few years ago. 32 GB is safer.
Why is RAM so expensive in 2026? AI data centers are buying high-bandwidth memory. HBM uses several times the wafer area of normal DDR5. Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron are prioritizing that over consumer sticks. Micron is exiting the Crucial consumer brand.
When will RAM prices drop? Micron and others have said supply stays tight through 2028. Do not plan on a big drop before then.
Did Micron stop making RAM? No. Micron is exiting the Crucial consumer brand. Shipments of Crucial products continue until February 2026. The company is shifting capacity toward AI and enterprise customers.
