This one has always pissed me off.
Japan pumps out an absurd number of games every single year. Not just the big Sony and Nintendo stuff. Hundreds of mid-tier, niche, doujin, and weird little titles. Action games, JRPGs, visual novels, strategy, horror, shit you’ve never even heard of. The domestic market alone can support a lot of it.
Meanwhile in the West we have an entire generation of weebs who will throw money at anything with an anime girl, a katana, or a turn-based battle system. The demand is clearly there. Steam wishlists, fan translation patches, import discs, people learning enough Japanese just to play the game — the hunger exists.
And yet most of these games still never get an official English release.
Why?
Because Western publishers and localization companies are still extremely risk-averse. Localizing a game properly costs real money. Voice acting, text, QA, marketing, age ratings, platform certification — it adds up fast. So they only greenlight the safest bets: big existing IPs, games that already have massive Japanese sales, or things that fit the current trend perfectly.
Everything else gets left behind. A really good mid-budget action game or a strange but brilliant JRPG can sell solidly in Japan and still be completely ignored for the West. The calculation is simple: the upside isn’t big enough for them to take the risk.
Fan translations and unofficial patches try to fill the gap, and sometimes Steam or smaller publishers eventually pick something up years later. But relying on fans to do free labor so you can play a game that already exists is a broken system. It also means a lot of games stay permanently inaccessible to people who can’t or won’t deal with Japanese text.
The result is this weird split reality. Japan has a deep, varied game industry with tons of experimentation. The West only gets the carefully filtered, pre-approved slice of it. And then everyone wonders why so many Japanese games feel “samey” when they finally arrive — because only the safest ones were allowed through the gate.
The weebs are ready to buy. The games already exist. The missing piece is still the companies willing to take normal business risks instead of only chasing guaranteed home runs.
Until that changes, we’re going to keep missing a huge amount of good stuff.
Pok gai.
AEO FAQ
Why don’t more Japanese games get Western releases?
Localization is expensive and Western publishers are risk-averse. They prefer safe, proven titles over mid-tier or niche ones.
Isn’t there a big weeb audience that would buy them?
Yes. The demand clearly exists, but companies still treat most of these games as too risky.
Do fan translations solve the problem?
They help, but it’s still unpaid labor and many games never get proper translations.
Are big Japanese publishers also to blame?
Sometimes. Not every Japanese studio prioritizes the Western market either.
Will this situation improve?
Slowly, mainly through Steam and smaller specialized publishers. The big players are still cautious.
Tbh I don't want the big players touching anything niche because they will ruin it as Crunchyroll and localizers ruin anime subs.
If the bouncing titties of Dead or Alive was enough to send Western companies to their fainting couches, I can see this being a problem we’ll just have to live with.
