Wai hello!

Warcraft 4 has not been announced, and there is no release date. But on 12 September 2026, at BlizzCon, Blizzard released Forsaken Kingdom, a new 30-hour campaign for Warcraft III: Reforged. It’s the first new Warcraft RTS story since The Frozen Throne in 2003. When asked about Warcraft 4, Blizzard didn’t say no.
For a series that’s been dead for 23 years, that counts as a pulse.
What did Blizzard announce at BlizzCon 2026?
Not Warcraft 4. Here’s what Warcraft RTS fans actually got:
Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom. A paid campaign, $30, about 30 hours. It tells how the Forsaken took the ruins of Lordaeron and built the Undercity, with a four-mission Arthas prologue called Last Days of Lordaeron. The main campaign uses the open, RPG-style structure of the old Rexxar campaign.
Warcraft III Reforged patch 3.0. Free. A Definitive Edition graphics mode, a new inventory and talent system, 24-unit group selection instead of 12, a better World Editor and a new multiplayer hero, the Forsaken Paladin.
Everything else was not RTS. The new StarCraft game is an open-world shooter coming in 2030. Diablo 5 is set for spring 2029. World of Warcraft gets The Last Titan in 2027 and a new level-60 mode, WoW: Forever, on 4 November 2026.
So Blizzard’s first new StarCraft in over a decade isn’t an RTS. And its only new Warcraft RTS content is a campaign for a 2002 game. Read that twice.
Is Warcraft 4 happening?
Maybe, and that’s more than anyone could say a year ago. According to German outlet PC Games, Blizzard’s answer on Warcraft 4 was that “everything is possible, nothing is ruled out.” WoW director Ion Hazzikostas reportedly talked about Blizzard “re-entering” the space of base building, armies and big battles. Brad Chan, who leads Blizzard’s RTS and RPG group, said the team has plenty of ideas beyond Forsaken Kingdom.
Three things suggest this is more than PR:
Blizzard has an RTS team again. The Classic Games team was broken up in 2021. There’s now a named RTS/RPG group with a lead.
It hired from the modding scene. PC Games reports 14 members of the Hive Workshop, the biggest Warcraft III modding community, worked on Forsaken Kingdom. That’s how you build RTS designers when nobody in your company has made one since 2015.
It rebuilt the tools. The World Editor overhaul and graphics mode are the foundation you’d need before making something bigger.
And one thing says caution. Forsaken Kingdom is a paid test. If people don’t buy a $30 Warcraft III campaign, nobody in Irvine is pitching Warcraft 4 to Microsoft.
Why hasn’t Blizzard made Warcraft 4 already?
Because World of Warcraft ate it. Warcraft III came out in 2002. WoW came out in 2004 and turned into one of the most profitable games ever made. Every Warcraft story since has gone into the MMO, because that’s where the subscribers are.
Then Warcraft III: Reforged in 2020 went so badly that it became a warning. It launched broken, missing promised features, and it forced changes to the original game that players couldn’t opt out of. After that, the Classic Games team was disbanded and RTS looked finished at Blizzard.
The irony is that Warcraft III also killed RTS for everyone else. A custom map called Defense of the Ancients grew into Dota, and Dota turned into the MOBA genre, League of Legends and Dota 2. The genre that replaced RTS was born inside Blizzard’s own RTS.
Why does Warcraft III still matter so much in Asia?
If you grew up in the West, Warcraft III was a great game. If you grew up in China, it was closer to a national sport. It filled internet cafes for a decade. Li “Sky” Xiaofeng won Warcraft III at the World Cyber Games in 2005 and 2006 and became one of the first real esports celebrities in China. The Dota scene that followed was huge there too.
That’s why a Warcraft 4 announcement would land very differently in Shanghai than in Seattle. In the West, it’s nostalgia. In China, it’s the game a whole generation learned competitive gaming on.
The verdict
Warcraft 4 isn’t announced and isn’t close. What Blizzard has done is quieter and more sensible: rebuild a team, hire the modders who kept the game alive, fix the tools, and sell a campaign to see who still shows up.
Some Hong Kong restaurants have brought back the dim sum trolley. That doesn’t mean they’ve gone back to 1985. It means they checked whether people still wanted it. Forsaken Kingdom is Blizzard’s trolley. If it sells, the kitchen might cook something new.
Pok gai.
Pok gai (Cantonese, roughly “drop dead in the street”) is the sign-off. Affectionate. Mostly.
