Stranger Than Heaven is the next major title from the team behind Like a Dragon / Yakuza, published by Sega. It launches on January 15, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (Steam + day-one Xbox Game Pass). Pre-orders are already live.
This is a distant prequel. You play as Makoto Daito, a Japanese-American orphan portrayed by Yu Shirota. In 1915 he leaves San Francisco after facing heavy discrimination and stows away to Japan looking for a place where he belongs. The game follows him across fifty years of his life through five distinct eras and cities:
1915 – Kokura / Fukuoka
1929 – Kure / Hiroshima
1943 – Minami / Osaka
1951 – Atami / Shizuoka
1965 – Shinjuku / Tokyo
Over that half-century the story shows the actual founding and rise of the Tojo Clan, with Daito as its central origin figure. RGG has been clear that you do not need any prior knowledge of the Like a Dragon series to understand or enjoy it.
The combat system is a clean break from both the old brawler style and the recent turn-based RPG direction. You control the left and right sides of Daito’s body independently. Face buttons and triggers are mapped to specific limbs, so a right punch, left kick, block with one arm and counter with the other all feel distinct. It looks more deliberate and physical than classic Yakuza combat, with environmental interactions and a wide range of upgradable weapons (knives, hammers, katanas, etc.).
Music and performance form a second major pillar. Daito can collect sounds and environmental recordings while exploring. He later works with composers to turn those recordings into original tracks. On top of that there is a showman/management layer where you recruit street musicians, organise performances, place advertisements, and build a reputation in the entertainment world of each era. The game treats the underworld and the entertainment world as two sides of the same struggle for survival and belonging.
The cast is one of the most unusual RGG has ever assembled. Snoop Dogg plays Orpheus, a smuggler who becomes a mentor figure. Tori Kelly, Ado, and Official Hige Dandism’s Satoshi Fujihara all appear as characters and perform the main theme song together. The studio also secured official permission to use the likenesses of the late Bunta Sugawara and Tupac Shakur (as the character Amaru). Both estates were involved, and RGG has stated that no generative AI was used to recreate either of them.
Development started years ago. The project was first publicly teased as Project Century at The Game Awards 2024, received its final title in 2025, and received major gameplay and cast reveals throughout 2026. RGG originally considered splitting the 50-year story into a trilogy but decided a single large game would preserve the emotional continuity better. Locations are inspired by real historical cities but deliberately adjusted for gameplay rather than perfect historical accuracy. Real historical events only appear when they directly affect Daito’s personal story.
This is RGG Studio taking a bigger structural risk than usual while still operating in the territory they know best: character-driven stories about men who have nowhere else to go, violence as survival, and the search for a place that feels like home. A 50-year origin story for the Tojo Clan with this cast, this combat system, and this dual underworld/entertainment focus is not a side project. It is one of the most ambitious single-player narrative games currently scheduled for 2027.
