Wai hello!
Solarpunk released on 8 June 2026 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, priced at $22.99 and on Game Pass from day one. It’s a cozy co-op survival game about powering floating islands with renewable energy, made by Cyberwave, a two-person team in Germany. It went into launch with more than 1.2 million Steam wishlists and has now sold 250,000 copies.
That last number is the interesting one.
What is Solarpunk?
Solarpunk is a survival-crafting sandbox with the danger taken out. You live on floating islands, build solar panels, wind turbines and water generators, and use the power to run farms, drones and eventually an airship to reach other islands.
Developer: Cyberwave (two-person core team, Germany)
Publisher: rokaplay / Metaroot
Released: 8 June 2026, full 1.0, no early access
Platforms: PC (Steam, Epic, GOG), PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, Game Pass
Price: $22.99
Co-op: 1-4 players online
Main content: About 20 hours
Steam reviews: Very Positive, 81% of 1,881
There is no combat, no enemies and no PvP. There’s no story campaign either. The world is a limited set of handcrafted islands across two biomes. After about 20 hours you’ve seen it, and the game becomes a base you decorate with friends.
Why does Solarpunk have 1.2 million wishlists?
Because it looked like the thing a lot of people wanted and nobody else was making. Survival games are mostly about being hunted. Solarpunk looked like Valheim’s building with none of the dying, in a pretty world of floating islands, with a hopeful theme instead of a zombie apocalypse.
It also had four years to collect wishlists. It was revealed in 2022. A 2023 Kickstarter raised €305,266 from 6,312 backers, about ten times its goal. Its Steam Next Fest demo passed 500,000 downloads. Every time the game appeared, the wishlist number went up, and every time the wishlist number went up, the game appeared in more places.
Did 1.2 million wishlists turn into sales?
Yes, roughly one sale for every five wishlists. Cyberwave and rokaplay announced 250,000 copies sold on 22 September. That’s across all platforms, measured against Steam wishlists alone, and it doesn’t count anyone who played through Game Pass.
At $22.99 that’s about $5.7 million at full price, before platform cuts, discounts and the publisher’s share. For two people, that’s a career.
The part worth studying is what they did three days before launch. On 5 June, Cyberwave posted a warning to its own buyers. The game was “not a giant studio production,” they wrote, and “not trying to compete with the biggest survival games in scope, content amount, or system depth.” Then the line most studios would never publish: “We do not want anyone to buy Solarpunk for the wrong reasons.”
In an interview on 22 September, they called expectation management “one of the biggest successes” of the launch. I think they’re right. Look at the reviews. All-time sits at 81% positive. The last 30 days are at 72%. It’s dipping, but it’s not the collapse you get when a game is sold as something bigger than it is.
Picture a Temple Street dai pai dong with the menu nailed to the wall outside and the price of everything written in marker. Twelve dishes, no more. The queue never gets angry, because everyone in it knew what they were getting before they sat down. Solarpunk nailed its menu to the wall.
Solarpunk vs the Eastern small-team hits
It’s worth comparing Solarpunk with Escape from Duckov, the other tiny-team survival hit of the last year. Duckov was made by five people at Team Soda inside Bilibili and sold 3 million copies in under a month in late 2025.
The difference isn’t talent. Duckov had a Chinese platform giant as its publisher and the Chinese market as its home crowd, and it topped China’s Steam chart in its first week. Solarpunk had a Darmstadt publisher, a Kickstarter and a wishlist. The Western small-team path runs on patience and honesty. The Eastern one runs on a home market big enough to launch you.
So, is Solarpunk worth it?
Yes, if you want a calm building game to play with one to three friends for 20 to 40 hours. No, if you want Valheim, Enshrouded or anything with a boss. If you have Game Pass, try it there first. That’s exactly what Game Pass is for.
The verdict
Solarpunk isn’t the biggest indie launch of 2026. It might be the smartest. Two people had 1.2 million people waiting, told them exactly how small the thing was, and still sold a quarter of a million copies. Most AAA studios can’t manage the honesty part.
Pok gai.
Pok gai (Cantonese, roughly “drop dead in the street”) is the sign-off. Said with love. Mostly.
