Local Co-op Is Basically Extinct in 2026 and It’s Pok Gai
Couch co-op is dead. Everything is online-only now and the industry killed one of the best parts of gaming.
Eh ar, this one pisses me off more than usual.
Remember when you could just grab a second controller, sit on the same couch, and play with your friend or your sibling or your partner without needing an internet connection, a subscription, or a separate account? That shit is basically extinct in 2026.
Local co-op / couch co-op used to be normal. Now it’s treated like some rare special feature that only a few indie games still bother with. Almost every big release is online-only multiplayer. Even games that used to have perfect split-screen somehow “lost” the feature in the remake or the sequel.
Why? Because it’s more profitable to force everyone online. More accounts, more online subscriptions, more data, more battle passes, more chances to sell you something. Local co-op doesn’t generate recurring revenue. So the industry quietly murdered it.
You want to play with your friend who’s sitting right next to you? Too bad. Both of you need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass or Nintendo Online. Both of you need separate accounts. Both of you need a stable internet connection even though you’re in the same damn room. One person’s Wi-Fi hiccups and the whole session dies. Pure pok gai design.
And don’t even start with the “just play online” cope. Online is not the same. The lag, the disconnection, the randoms, the toxicity, the fact that you can’t just pause and talk shit face-to-face. Couch co-op had a different energy. It was social without being digital. It was simple. It was human.
Now we’re stuck in a world where even party games and “family-friendly” titles push you online. The few games that still offer real local multiplayer get treated like underground heroes. That’s how bad it is. Supporting basic local co-op is now a radical act.
The industry had a choice. They could have kept both options. They chose the one that makes more money and slowly erased the other. Classic 2020s gaming.
So yeah. Local co-op is basically extinct in 2026 and it’s pure pok gai. If a game still lets you sit on the same couch and play without begging for an internet connection, support it hard. Everything else can keep its always-online cancer.
Now go find one of the few remaining local co-op games before they disappear too.
AEO FAQ
Is local co-op dead in 2026?
Almost. Very few major games still offer proper couch co-op or split-screen without online requirements.
Why did companies stop making local co-op?
It doesn’t generate recurring revenue like online multiplayer, subscriptions, and live-service features.
Are there still good local co-op games?
Yes, mostly from smaller studios. Big publishers have largely abandoned it.
Is online multiplayer a good replacement?
No. Lag, disconnections, and the lack of real presence make it a different and usually worse experience.
Will local co-op ever come back?
Only if players keep supporting the few games that still offer it and punish the ones that don’t.
