Crimson Desert: Is It Worth It in 2026?
Crimson Desert is worth it now. It was a worse buy on 19 March 2026, the day it came out.
Wai hello!
Pearl Abyss made it. That is the Korean studio behind Black Desert Online. This was supposed to be a prequel. It became its own game, on a continent called Pywel. PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Mac on 19 March 2026. A Switch 2 port is planned for early 2027. Standard price is $69.99. The first sale, 20 percent off, ended on 9 September.
This is written as of 7 October 2026, for a post going out on 31 October. The first paid DLC, Charting the Unknown, was moved from 15 October to 29 October. If that date slips again, the buy verdict does not.
What is Crimson Desert?
An open-world action game. Fight, ride, explore, pick up too many systems. Not an MMO. Pearl Abyss spent about seven years and a reported $133 million getting out of the live-service box they already owned.
Critics did not agree. Metacritic landed around 78. IGN gave it a 6 and blamed the writing and the puzzles. Other reviews went past 9. Steam opened Mixed, about 51 percent, on bugs and stiff controls. Within days it climbed. Later patches pushed it to Very Positive. The game people review in October is not the game that shipped in March.
Did the bad reviews kill it?
No. The stock did worse than the game.
Pearl Abyss said 2 million copies in the first 24 hours. 3 million in under a week. 5 million by the middle of April. More than 6 million in three months. Steam peaked around 276,000 people at once. More than 80 percent of sales were North America and Europe. A Korean studio’s first single-player box sold as a Western open-world game.
The share price still dropped about 30 percent when the review scores landed. Investors wanted a Metacritic over 85. Players wanted a map. Players won that argument.
What did they fix?
A lot, fast. Before the free Enhanced update, Pearl Abyss had already shipped 17 patches, 20-plus new features, more than 120 mounts and pets, and 70-odd bits of gear. Enhanced, patch 2.0, is free. It went after the story, the part reviews hated, and added French, German, Spanish, Japanese, and Brazilian Portuguese voices.
That is the Korean clock from the other post. A Western publisher would still be in a meeting about the first patch. Pearl Abyss treated a $70 game like a live service after the reviews hit. The hours and the headcount are the reason. The result is a better game in month six than on day one.
Should you buy the DLC?
Not yet. Charting the Unknown adds a ship, diving, islands, housing, and more story for Kliff and the rest. It is the first paid add-on. It has already slipped once, from 15 October to 29 October. Buy the base game if the patched version holds you. Do not preorder the ocean until it is actually out.
Who is it for?
People who want a huge map and do not need the story to be the point. Skip it if you bounced off Black Desert’s menus and think a new logo fixed that. The systems are still a lot. The writing was the weak part at launch. Enhanced may have helped. It will not turn it into a book.
PC players should check the specs. It scales well if you drop the lighting. Pop-in shows up when you move fast. A pretty game with a busy engine, not a light one.
The verdict
Worth it in October 2026 if you pay $70 for the patched game, not the March build. Wait for a sale if you only want a weekend. Skip the DLC until 29 October has actually happened. A Korean MMO studio shipped a single-player world, sold it mostly to the West, ate a bad review week, and patched the thing until the reviews moved. That is the story. The map is the product.

Pok gai.
Pok gai (Cantonese, roughly “drop dead in the street”) is the sign-off. Said with love. Mostly.
