Late 2026 and the pitch is still the same scam: type words, get a game, quit your job.
Steam is now a landfill with a search bar. New uploads keep ticking the AI box. Next Fest is full of trailers that look like a perfume ad directed by a blender. Faces almost human. Hands almost hands. Guns that look like they were dreamed by someone who has only seen guns in other generated pictures. Then you install it and there is nothing there. You press buttons. Things move. Your brain does not care.
That is the trash. Not “a tool existed.” The trash is shipping the first vomit and asking for money.
What you are actually buying
Most of these are not clever living worlds. They are:
A cover made by an image model
NPC talk copied from a chatbot that has never been punched
Levels that are the same room wearing a hat
A trailer prettier than the build, which is the whole business model
The store page is the product. The game is leftover.
Players figured it out. Steam made studios confess. That confession became a smell. Cheap AI games already review worse. Ask more than twenty dollars and people get violent in the comments. A lot of these things sell like a wet sock. More games. Same emptiness.
Why it feels dead when you touch it
A game is not a folder of pictures. A game is the part between the pictures.
A real designer sits there hitting jump until the jump stops feeling like wet bread. They delete a line that is grammatically fine and spiritually homeless. They play the third fight, realise it is the first fight again, and change it because they have shame. A model does not have shame. It will give you twelve more “fine” rooms. Fine is how you decorate a waiting room.
Feel is the job. Weight. Timing. The second you think “I did that” instead of “the prompt did that.” Models do not get bored. Players do. That gap is the entire genre.
You can see it in the faces. Your eyes catch the fake before you write a review. After that, every quest sounds like a call centre even if a human later poked it with a stick.
Nobody made a game. Somebody made content.
Tell a model “make it more fun” and it nods and does nothing. Tell it “the enemy should wind up for half a second before it charges” and you get a knob you can test. Tools are fine. Taste is the job.
Slop skips the job. Theme generated. Plot generated. Art generated. Steam text generated. Nobody played it long enough to hate it. If you cannot hate your own game, you are not a designer. You are a vending machine.
This site already learned that the hard way with POST-MORTEM. Using a model to help write and code is one thing. Letting the model be the director is how you get a thing that looks finished and plays like a settings menu.
When this stuff is allowed to exist
Fine:
Ugly placeholder art while a real pass happens
Boilerplate code you will rip out
Translation drafts a human actually reads
One person using tools to ship a small game they designed
Trash:
The whole look is generated and never cleaned
Every NPC talks like customer support
Trailer and gameplay are two different products
The selling point is “made with AI” instead of “this is good”
More developers now say this is hurting the industry. Players treat the Steam AI label like food that sat out overnight. Big showcases still sneak it in, then act shocked when the comments become a war crime.

The machines got faster. The taste problem did not move. You can generate a game-shaped object before lunch. You cannot generate a reason to finish it.
If your game only exists because the tools made it cheap, it will feel cheap. That is not a debate. That is the receipt.

You hit the nail on the head. Everything the AI creates needs refinement and human judgement. The better and cheaper the models get the easier it is for anyone to one shot prompt a game. I’ve seen no evidence that an AI can actually create an interesting game end-to-end yet, it mostly creates a mechanic and uses it over and over (if there are more advanced games than this please point me to them).
Regardless of all the hype we hear from the AI companies, I still think we’re years away from a world where AI agents are pumping out high quality games on the daily. It’ll be an interesting time if it ever does happen.
